Family law attorneys often work within client relationships that are emotionally demanding and psychologically complex. Divorce represents a major attachment loss, even when spouses are committed to remaining amicable and collaborative; as a result, the process of divorce can reactivate unresolved or early attachment injuries. Internalized models of relationships exert a powerful influence on our behavior throughout the lifespan. When your clients reenact long-standing maladaptive patterns in their relationships with you, they inadvertently harm your working alliance and undermine your ability to be an effective advocate. Using a combination of scientific presentation, clinical videotape, and experiential exercises, this training gives you the necessary tools to work with your most challenging clients. The presentation reviews the science of relationship; explains why early relational patterns remain durable and powerfully influential throughout adulthood; describes how these patterns can disrupt or sabotage your goals for legal representation; and identifies how you can re-establish an effective attorney-client relationship during and after disruption. Principles of deliberate practice and advanced skill acquisition are integrated throughout the seminar, so that you can identify the problematic relational patterns that undermine effective client representation and transform your capacity to work effectively in complex interpersonal contexts.
