The attorney-client relationship, and the client’s experience of being understood and valued, is at the heart of successful legal representation. Despite this, attorneys receive no formal training in how to listen, attune, and respond to clients. The past 20 years has produced extraordinary breakthroughs in the science of emotion and relationships; Psychologically-Informed LawyeringTM is the first course to present these findings to attorneys, with the singular goal of transforming their client management skills. Exceptional advocacy requires psychological proficiency. Psychological health and resilience are defined by the capacity to recognize, understand, and use emotions in order to take effective action on behalf of ourselves and others. The ability to listen with deep attunement, to cultivate mindful and powerful presence, to communicate in an affirming and empathic manner, to repair inevitable relational ruptures, to co-regulate a client who has become distressed or dysregulated – all of these processes depend upon interpersonal microskills that can only be mastered with experiential learning. Psychologically-Informed LawyeringTM teaches attorneys these skills, and the science on which they’re based, in clear and practical terms.
