Divorce coaches, parenting specialists, and other collaborative mental health professionals often work with clients who have histories of complex trauma. Without treatment, the effects of complex trauma can persist throughout adulthood, manifesting in painful relationships, states of intense emotional dysregulation, self-punitive behavior, and persistent feelings of shame and hopelessness. When trauma remains unaddressed in a legal context, its effects can complicate or escalate legal proceedings, confuse or distress the collaborative team, and further harm the traumatized client. This training equips forensic mental health professionals to work with complex clients within the context of ongoing family law proceedings. The presentation reviews the impact of complex trauma on the brain and nervous system; identifies traumatic retentions that can impede a client’s ability to mobilize or advocate on their own behalf; explores the connection between early relational betrayal and dissociative disorders; and demonstrates how clinicians can use trauma-responsive therapeutic techniques in order to help the client tolerate the painful disruption of divorce.
